YOUR COMMUNITY HEALING CHECKLIST

Thank you for joining the Community Healing Network on the path to emotional healing and renewal.  Here are initial steps you can take to promote healing in your life and in your community.

FIND OUT MORE
  • Watch at least one of these movies: Antwone Fisher; Pride; Ethnic Notions; or A Place of Our Own
  • Read at least one of these books:  Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority by Tom Burrell; A Song Flung Up to Heaven by Dr. Maya Angelou; The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison; Rock My Soul: Black People and Self-Esteem by bell hooks; Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome by Dr. Joy DeGruy; or Lay My Burden Down by Alvin F. Poussaint, M.D. and Amy Alexander.
  • Join the CHN Online Video and Reading Club by becoming a CHN fan on Facebook and/or Twitter.
ACT
  • Do your best to eat a balanced diet everyday and exercise at least three times a week.
  • Watch what you think and what you say. Try to clear your mind of the notion of “good hair,” the idea that light skin is better than dark skin, and any thoughts that Black people are not as smart, beautiful, lovable, capable, and worthy as other people.
  • Make it a point to think positive thoughts about yourself and say positive and encouraging words to those around you.
  • Do your best not to pass on any toxic beliefs about Black people to your children. Make sure to tell your children often that they are beautiful, lovable, smart, capable, and worthy of the very best that life has to offer.
  • Make a list of at least three things you will do in the coming year in your family, neighborhood, and community to help overcome the myth of Black inferiority.
  • Put “time for healing” on your calendar. Plan to celebrate Community Healing DaysSM in 2010: October 15, 16, and 17.
SHARE
  • Make it a point to talk with your family and friends about the myth of Black inferiority and strategies for overcoming it.
  • Urge your family, friends, neighbors, community of faith, and the civic groups to which you belong to celebrate Community Healing DaysSM too.
  • Become part of the Community Healing Network’s online communities to connect and share with others on the path to healing.
